The story of Hotel Balka Strand
The story of Hotel Balka Strand begins long before the hotel got its current name. The area around Balka Strand was previously an open and relatively desolate landscape with sand, heath and marshes. South of the beach was, among other things, the Hundsemyre marsh, where people used to dig peat for fuel. Along the coast there were small fishing settlements, where local fishermen pulled their boats up onto the beach.
Back then, Balka was far from the holiday resort that is known today. But the beach had something special. The fine, bright sand and the shallow water made Balka Strand one of the most child-friendly beaches on Bornholm, and gradually the first bathers began to find their way to the area.
In the early 1900s, a small guesthouse arose on Boulevarden in Balka, known as Kjøllers Pensionat. Here, summer guests could enjoy a simple holiday close to the sea with board and lodging in homely surroundings. The guesthouse later developed into Pension Balka Strand, and as tourism on Bornholm grew, the place was gradually expanded.
At the end of the 20th century, the guesthouse was further developed into the hotel that is now known as Hotel Balka Strand. New buildings and modern facilities were added so that the hotel could welcome even more guests to stays close to the beach.
Today, Hotel Balka Strand is a cozy and relaxed family-run hotel on Bornholm, where guests live a few minutes' walk from Balka Strand. Although the hotel has been modernized over the years, the history still lives on – from the first guesthouse guests to today's holiday guests who visit Bornholm to experience the nature, the beach and the special atmosphere of Balka.
